Antique lamps have certain elegance when displayed inside a room. In certain features of home design, a piece that projects an unknown past will usually spark the imagination and will typically be a subject of conversation when friends visit. Nowadays, manufacturers try to imitate this image by emulating ornamental approach towards antique furniture.
Reduced eyestrain and glare. Many homes still use fluorescent lighting throughout their various rooms. Your eyes subconsciously pick up the flickering of such lights, increasing eyestrain and glare. While the light of a table lamp illuminates outwards, the light of a floor lamp illuminates downwards. This provides a broader area of light that is helpful for whatever activity you are doing.
Floor lamps may be intended for lighting while others may be built in with shelves or racks. Because of its flexibility, these lamps should be placed in areas where children will not trip on them. Probably the best place for them is in corners or to the sides of living room furniture.
Our lamp shop regularly restores these antique floor lamps for resale as well as for our customers' own use. From our 30 years of experience it is clear that many of these antique floor lamps will last for hundreds of years. The electrical components, the fabric shades and the painted finishes often need restoration but most were made with such fine quality, that they are a much better value than brand new high end lamps that sell for many hundreds of dollars. You will find some other surprises about these collectible works of art below.
For the setting. In deciding where you want to position your floor lamp, you should always regard all the surrounding furnishings inside a particular space. The lamp should not be placed in an open area where children might happen to trip on them and get hurt. Try maximizing the place by choosing a floor lamp that takes up little floor space. It will also be more appealing if you match the lamp with the interior and theme of the whole room.
